Influences from Music Videos:

Throughout the process of creating ideas for our music video, regular meetings are important. In this time, we put together our ideas that we have and influences we have been inspired by. These influences come from different sources of media, such as books, magazine articles, posters, existing music videos, films (known as Postmodernism). Some of our ideas may have even come from our dreams or nightmares?

The song that we will be creating a music video for is called 'Lights', therefore we have been looking at other music videos that have different styles and techniques of showing ways of lighting. Below is a montage of different examples of music videos that have a way of using lights creatively.

Florence and the Machine - Cosmic Love

Examples shown by montage from Florence and The Machine music videos

Both videos, similar effects have been used. From watching her music videos, we picked out these shots as they stood out for us the most. We liked the use of warm colours and ambient effect it creates. These colours are used in a majority of her videos, this refers to her image and personality as being warm and her style. From feedback we recieved from our last lesson, looking at different light art and ways in which we could use light was an important aspect that we would need to look at.
This is where we looked more into using different objects such as fairy lights, glitter balls, L.E.Ds, UV paint, car lights, projectors (creating a siloette) and sparklers. (As seen by some of the images from the montage in the previous post)

Along with this we have been looking at costumes and locations.

JLS - Take a Chance on Me

Bruno Mars - It will rain

Other music videos we looked at:
Rihanna - We found love
Pixie Lott - What do you take me for
Leona Lewis - Collide
Professor Green - Read all about it
Kelly Clarkson - Mr Know it All

All of the above have particularly inspired us in may different ways.

Influences from Music Artists:

In order to gather some inspiration for building an image for our 'music arist' we have taken a look at some successful female artist which we believe would suit well for creating our own image for the music artist.

Meeting (29/09/11)

After our media class, we both decided to have a meeting about our intentions for the music video. In class today, we were talking about how the images and the concept of the video is key, especially deciding on the setting and whether its suitable for the song. Towards the end of the lesson, we all spoke about our ideas for the song, and created a brainstorm of new ideas and suggestions. Together (Aimée and I) discussed the feedback that we recieved during the lesson. We generated a brainstorm to list the ideas / opinions / points that were raised for our video.

The main points raised effecting the structure of the video were that the music video would not necessarily need a story or an ending. We spoke about the settings in which we could use. In order for our music video to appeal to the international and British market, we need to research and spend a reasonable amount of time looking at different locations. We are very fortunate as we live fairly close to London which is the centre of the second biggest Music market in the UK, where it is full of opportunity and is recognised for its skyline of landmarks.

  • mature themes that this audience can relate to for your content
  •  Sensitivity, Artistic expression, Uniqueness = Alternative (Why? what makes our video this genre)
  • Image, what will sell the album to the audience

Our final idea - 'Lights - Ellie'

Lauren and I have decided to work on a remake of Ellie Goulding's 'lights'. The reason for this is because we believe we can work well on this particular song and create a great campaign around it.
The concept of this song will be based around the title of the song itself 'Lights'. Within the video, we want to incorporate the vision of lights so that it has a meaning as well as being interesting to the audience, The reason for this is so that it has a connection with the video, so that overall the song title, lyrics and video all have link with one another.
The content of the video will include artistic and creative shots so it keeps in style with the song, as well as the genre of sensitivity, uniqueness and artistic expression/creativity. Because of the different paces within the video, it will give us a better advantage to work with different effects and edits around the beats of the song, for example, the beginning section of the song is quite ambient compared to the slight-dubstep twist in the middle of the song. The drama and the interest of this idea is to focus more on the 'artist' of the song and as a singer, reflecting her lyrics to her own life and story within the video. We want to focus more on the performance and visual, intertwined with narrative style of video to capture the artists song in relation to her and her connection with lights.
Alot of the shots we imagine to use are a variation of close-up shots to make it feel more personal to the viewer, as well as a mixture of different shots to keep the video interesting.
By analysing the lyrics, we have talked about ways to relate the lyrics to the visuals of the song, such as how she is singing the song and what mood it creates - ambient, relaxed and independent.
We are planning to include many creative shots and effects within the video, such as incorporating light instruments such as projectors, to be put on the singer, and wired (christmas) lights to make it more visually interesting and have a relation to the song. In terms of costume/dress, we decided that because we want to highlight the 'artist' of the song as innocent, independant and unique we were thinking of natural make-up, but the dress will be casual/feminine. We want to include a couple of settings within the video to keep it interesting. Specifically, we were thinking about nice areas within London, such as the Royal Victoria Docks and shots near the Tower Bridge.

Below is a video we put together of the song 'Lights' and some images we have included to give a more visual representation of the types of images we have been imagining for the video! :)

The images below indicate some of our visions of what we see being incorporated in this video.

Moodboard for concept and idea - Hyperrealism

In our lesson, we both constructed a moodboard based on a hyperreal concept. We have selected various images to give a visual representation of what came in our minds when trying to think of hyperreal ideas whilst listening to the song.
We came up with some futuristic ideas that we thought would apply well, as we believed the song had some futuristic and electronic style to it.
We liked the idea of representing the singer of the song as a 'projection' or 'hologram' because we thought it suited well with the style of the song and believe we could create a good concept of lights around the idea.

    Target Audience Collage

From our research on similar artists/music and their audiences and fans, we have intended our audience to be similar to what Pixie Lott and Ellie Goulding have attracted.
Our target audience will be teenagers and young adults ranging (mostly) from the age of 17 - 22, male and female.
The reason for this is because we have looked at similar styles of music and artists and gathered the typical audience that is normally common for them. Being teenagers ourselves, we are able to understand who would like the style of music and artist and who wouldn't.

    Welcome!

Welcome to Aimée and Lauren's blog!

Over the next few months we will be working together on our media project to produce a Promotional Campaign for the release of a new album.
Our blog will display all of the planning, research, practise, analysis and practical that we will both undertake over the course of the project.
